Things To Do
There is a wealth of activities and attractions in the Bahamas to suit everyone in your family. With some of the best locations for fishing, diving and sailing in the world. Here is a brief lowdown on what a vacation in the Bahamas has to offer:
Bahamas Weddings and Honeymoons
The romantic Bahamas are a popular destination for weddings and honeymoons. Organise your own or try one of the many wedding packages that are available and get married on one of the beautiful beaches or quaint chapels that are dotted throughout the islands.
Bahamas Rum and Beer
The Bacardi Rum Distillery in Cataño is the largest rum distillery in the world, offering free tours and tastings. The Bahamians also brew their own beer – a refreshing, light and wheaty beverage named Kalik.
Film Locations
The Bahamas are often used for film locations and whilst on vacation you can take a tour to see some of the prime locations where iconic movies,
including six features from the James Bond series and the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, were filmed.
Bahamas Beaches
All of the beaches in the archipelago are gorgeous – with fine white (or pink!) sands, clear waters and many wonderful bars and restaurants dotted along the shores. If you’re looking for a more peaceful retreat, around 80% of the beaches of the Bahamas are undeveloped and isolated, with no noisy crowds to disturb you – a true island paradise.
Diving and Snorkelling
The Bahamas are a world-class destination for divers and snorkelers alike. You can explore the many shipwrecks, mingle with the dolphins or explore the underwater caves, some of which were used for smuggling during the prohibition and American civil war.
In the Exumas you will find the famous Thunderball Cave – named after it was used in the James Bond film of the same. This is a popular location for snorkelers, who like to hand-feed the vibrant shoals of tropical marine fish.
Bahamas Fishing
The abundance of fish in these waters makes the Bahamas a prime location for both amateur and competitive anglers – tournaments take part throughout the year and more than 50 world fishing records have been set here. Fish commonly caught around these shores include Grouper, Snapper, Jack, Bonefish and Wahoo.
Bahamas Water Sports
Windsurfing, Kayaking, Parasailing, and Sailing activities abound in the Bahamas. Regattas take place regularly throughout the islands, particularly in the Exumas - and there are plenty of aquatic pursuits to keep the average person entertained. Whether you sail for pleasure or sport.
A Kayak is the perfect way to explore the shallow waters of the Out Islands, exploring uninhabited beaches and observing the wildlife.
Bahamas Golf
The constant sunshine means that the Bahamas are an ideal location for golf and they often play host to both amateur and world class tournaments. There are golf courses on Nassau, Paradise Island, Grand Bahama, the Abacos and Eleuthera.
Shopping in the Bahamas
Duty-free luxury items from around the world line the racks in Bahamian department stores. Shops which have the pink flamingo sign in the doorway have been certified by the government as selling genuine goods and they are an excellent place to pick up quality items such as cameras, linen, crystal and leather goods.
For those seeking souvenirs, Bahamian rum is an excellent choice, along with local craft bargains, such as woven textiles, hand-made jewellery and basket work, much of which can be found for sale alongside the beach at popular tourist destinations.
Dining in the Bahamas
Seafood is the staple of the Bahamian diet and is served fresh throughout the islands. The national dish is conch – a large shellfish, delicious served raw with lime juice and spices, or deep-fried (which is known as ‘cracked conch’).
The food is spicy and unique, with influences taken from West Africa and the American South reflecting the rich history of the island.
