Nassau / Paradise Island
Nassau is the capital city and largest port of entry in the Bahamas. It is located on the Island of New Providence and home to the Lynden Pindling International airport (formerly known as Nassau International Airport). This is the largest airport in the Bahamian archipelago. Because there are so many flights to the Bahamas from the U.S., the Airport contains U.S. Border preclearance facilities, which means that US flights to the Bahamas are allowed to operate as domestic flights when they make their return flight from the Bahamas to the US. Many tourists use this airport as it is the best route to neighbouring Paradise Island.
New Providence Island and Paradise Island are connected by two bridges which span Nassau Harbour.
Paradise Island contains many hotels and luxurious resorts and is best known for the Las Vegas-style resort ‘Atlantis’ which boasts one of the most expensive hotel suites in the world.
Paradise Island has featured in several movies – including two James Bond films – Thunderball and Casino Royale. Oprah Winfrey and Michael Jordan have homes here.
The Bahamas is famous for it’s rum and New Providence Island is home to the Bacardi Rum Factory – situated just south of Nassau. The factory runs special tours with rum tasting sessions for thirsty travelers.
Nassau is also famous for it’s ‘Junkanoo’ a vibrant and colorful street parade. The people in the parade wear vibrant costumes, play music and have large colourful floats – similar to traditional carnival or Mardi Gras celebrations. The Junkanoo takes place twice in winter - on December 26th and January 1st and there is also a month long collection of street events, known as Junkanoo June. Junkanoos also take place in other islands throughout the Bahamas but the one in Nassau is the most spectacular.
